The Authentic Thai Food

Finally….I get to meet the ‘REAL’ Somtam! Haha…haven’t been to Perlis / Thailand for quite long, I really miss my favourite food there. somtam!

the genuine somtam

the genuine somtam

Thanks to Arau Open Debate Championship(my client), I am at Perlis once again to taste this authentic Thai food at Padang Besar.

There’s a few food stalls with Somtam written in their menu in KL, but I would say they are not Somtam, juz some kind of Kerabu Mangga.huehue…haven’t they know what is the taste of Somtam?how dare they put it in menu without knowing how to make it. Worst of all, they don’t even have the wooden mortar to make it! I miss the bazaar Ramadhan in Kangar where I can get Apple, Papaya & Mangga Somtam. Seriously I miss the rare & genuine food of Thailand, tho I can’t really stand the hot food. Another that I miss(only available at Thailand) :

first issue of reka

first issue of reka

interesting.

more government bodies are now keen on publishing their own magazine brand.

reka , the first issue of Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia is now out. havin set my eyes on it at the Nile Bookstore, Kl Central i decided to get myself a copy. the price is affordable, tho (RM4.90). when i browse over the magazine…i just realize something.

I’ve wasted myself rm4.90 for a copy of crap! @*#$**(%R#$

I bought the magazine with a hope i will get something informative about art & design in Malaysia, to widen my knowledge and to boost my idea in this industry. It definitely did not meet my expectation at all. The content was all about a compilation of crap interviews with a number of designers, entrepreneur and trader ( more on furniture design, tho they did not tell this issue focus more on furniture thingy).

Their works, their life and their dreams.  crap.

They better publish interviews/biographies compilation instead of a magazine. May be they need to do research to understand what is the thing called magazine, what makes a magazine a magazine before thinking of publishing one. anyway, is that all ‘rekabentuk’ means? furniture designing?they did not tell that the issue  somebody please answer me. I went thru MRM’s website but they seems to be underneverendingrenovation.

Gosh..pleaaseee… impart the reader with informations, news, ideas, etc. I would be pleased to trade RM49 instead of RM4.90 for great information if that’s all it takes to give the best information. Yes…it is forgiven if the interviews include the designer’s study & research sequences. but I much to my despair…this issue failed to fulfill my thirst for local design info.

The Forgotten Pillar

Bull fighting. Is a famous cultural event in Spain.

But we have it in Malaysia too.

Better known as ‘laga kerbau’, it was once a famous game in Kedah. Kerbau was considered the most valuable herd, imported from Siam through Padang Besar train station circa 1667-1940. During these period, wealth of a person in Kedah was measured with the numbers of buffalo he owns. This farm animal was used to work in the paddy field, however some fierce buffalo are nurtured to be ‘kerbau laga’ to fight in annual ‘Laga Kerbau’ until it was banned circa 1930.

The venue of the annual event (Laga Kerbau) was at a field in front of Istana Anak Bukit. Yes. it’s my home area. The base of my home was the stage for the Sultan and his ministers to sit and watch the match. The pillars of the stage are still there around my house, which my granddad think was beneficial to keep when he built the house.

Years ago when my grandma was still alive, I remembered it became her place to put the ‘batu giling’ when makin her own cili giling and the place she cut the coconuts. However these days, with my busy working parents, the stones just sit there alone as nobody are using them for any activities more.

Here’s some pic of them…should be six of them but I wonder where the other one had gone. may be hidden somewhere in bushes i just couldn’t see

‘Talentime’ in my point of view

Talentime

Talentime

I juz watch the hottest local movie in town! haha..i know it’s late. been busy lately to get myself some hours to spend at cinema.it’s great having the time of my life…a lil shopping, the gr8 food and movie time..! I’ve been eager to watch Talentime as numbers of my frens urged me to, by tellin me how great it is. Ok…i gave it a try then, as it sounds so great. I hope it will not disappoint me as other Yasmin’s movie. Ok…story goes great at first…a lot of laughter in the cinema. yeah.i enjoy it.but it goes slower and slower despite should have reach the climacs. Anyway, it really touch some hearts in the cinema when Hafiz’s mum died in the hospital and when Mahesh being beaten by her mum. However…I really really am not agreed with how the movie portrayed the cultural/economy differences between races in Malaysia. Some said it is the honest emotion of Yasmin Ahmad, but should she raise different lifestyle among races issue, which hardly exist in our current community?

- the Indians are still the that low class, conservative community, still fighting among each other over dissatisfaction

- the Malays are that open-minded, thinking her daughter sleeping at home alone with her BF is acceptable and considered sweet

- the Chinese should always put achievement in school as the 1st priority, and will do anything to be the best achiever, even the mean things

melur & mahesh

melur & mahesh

I know she always put the relationship and racial conflict as her priority in every of her film, but I really am dissappointed as I thought this film is different from others. Hmm…but it’s ok…she already told it in her blog, that this film is not somethin new.

Well…in my point of view about the current scene of mixed culture in Malaysia, the racial gap among races are about to fade (except the Malay family’s lifestyle, which can hardly exist). More Indian are being elitist and business person,  hard to write this, but there are numbers of Chinese drop-out despite many being success in business and the Malay are not that open minded, putting the religion in the first place (I wonder how the mum of the Malay family seems to be good Islamic practise but can easily accept her daughter’s behaviour of being alone at home with a guy).

To cut it short, Malaysian nowadays regardless of race are living in harmony and equal economic condition. Anyway…honestly, I really enjoy the soundtracks. Great choice of music!

The First Issue of Senikini

Here they are:

Senikini – launching issue (Nov-Dec 2008)

Senikini – 1st issue

Well…it’s a good step for our National Art Gallery to produce a magazine to gather information of our local visual art scene. However i still think Kakiseni is the pundit of our local art scene, be it visual art or music scene. Kakiseni has vowed to take the responsibility to be the superhero of our local art scene long before the real hero open their eyes to see why they should be the hero. The new hero is warming up, i think….finally.

Music Showcase – UM

the music showcase 2009

the music showcase 2009

Its been long since I haven’t feast my ears at music shows..the last I’ve attended was the Miller’s Orchestra at Genting Highland in November 2008. Yeah…about 5 month..hehe. Pretty strange. I grew up listening to the loud brass band and orchestra  almost every day back at my alma mater Sultanah Asma School hostel. Sigh..how I miss those years. Since there’s one nearby, I decided to join in.

Apparently, the show is conducted by the Performance Art students of Universiti Malaya. Most of the performers are the final students, if I’m not mistaken. Overall performance are ok.mostly average…but there’s some really impressing…the Soprano girl, Doris who sang Mein Herr Marquis (Herr Marquis means Laughing Song by Johann Strauss Jr., composed for the Opera Die Fledermaus in 1874). The performance made the  grand evening. Here’s the video I’d taken during her performance :

menn herr marquis

The other impressing perfoermances are from Tan Kwee Chin with Rhapsody Op.11 No.3 C Major ( of the great female pianist Dohnanyi)  and the Tak Lempong, the humble yet amazing Minangkabau traditional music. The conductor himself has done great job conducting the team. And the last performance was from Dr Nasir’s music technology line up. Ouh…I fell in love with the arrangement of  ‘Ku Impikan Bintang’ they’ve played. It’s my fav Sean Ghazi’s song and they played it well.haha…I wish they played Shahnon Shah’s too.  The last song came with the singer…the chief of the Cultural Centre. And it was also my fav. song…sung by Utada Hikaru, Fly Me to the Moon. What a great nite!

Clay-zee Syndrome

Recently I’m crazy about clays! Haha…havin found a clay store, I’ve bought myself  a red, green, black and white clay and get busy makin miniatures that i wish to put in my terrariums.

The clay thing really intrigued me. I need to find the polymer clay! Polymer clay – the clay used to imitate wood, gems, metal, and hundreds of things. After getting to know the wonder of  clays, then only i got the idea of why the accessories designers are mushrooming lately. There’s a lot of the ethnic jeweleries along Masjid Jamek, The Curve’s flea market,  Amcorp Mall’s flea market,etc.. Now I know how they make it.Yeah…the ethnic accessories are made of the polymer clay! there’s no such thing as semi-precious gems/stone. hahaha.

Samurai Champloo

fuu, mugen and jin

fuu, mugen and jin

Last nite, I’ve finished watching the Samurai Champloo….wa..waa! No more anime to watch! Hafta download new one! huhu…

The anime was out in 2004, another brilliant work of Shinichiro Watanabe (the man behind the world renown Cowboy Bebop). Haha..one couldn’t believe the traditional story set can actually be mixed up with modern music element- the hip hop musics and graffiti until they watch this anime. Unbelievable, tho…that he can successfully make the cross-over of the Edo-period and hip-hop culture as if hip hop thingy really exist in those era. hehe…

Even the main character, the hippie samurai, Mugen got unconventional fighting style, which I suppose similar to capoeira.  I love the cool character..the traditional, mysterious looking samurai with wisdom, Jin. He does not do much of talking yet I like the way he is.  And another main character, Fuu…I admire her strong will to find the Samurai who smell like Sunflower with just a little clue (no clue at all when they start the journey)… The ending of it, however when all of them seperated to follow their own road, does not potray what they have learnt and gained throughout their long journey, that they actually depends on each other to survive. I couldn’t imagine what will happen along their journey alone without their comrade’s support.
